Everyone likes to think they are the worlds best driver, but the truth is that many of us develop dangerous driving habits that we are unaware of. My best advice on how to make yourself a better driver is to take note of hazardous things other drivers do around you on the road and remember them in your own driving habits.
A key element in being a safe driver is to never interrupt the flow of traffic. Whether you are turning, merging, changing lanes, or just driving down the road, this is, in my opinion, the most important element of driver safety. Your general driving speed is a important factor of moving with the flow of traffic.
"Collisions are more likely to happen when one driver goes faster or slower than the other cars on the road. If you drive faster than other traffic, you increase your chances of being involved in a collision. Studies have shown that speeding does not save more than a few minutes in an hour of driving time. Driving slower than other vehicles or stopping suddenly can be just as dangerous as speeding, if not more dangerous because you may cause a rear end collision or cause other drivers to swerve to avoid hitting you. If you notice that vehicles are passing you, move into the right lane and let them pass." DMV California Driver Handbook, 2010
