As I stated in our previous blog, I believe the key element to being a safe driver is to never interfere with the flow of traffic.  By doing this, you keep yourself safe from drivers who may not be paying full attention to the road. Merging correctly plays an important role in this concept. Most often we think of entering the freeway when we think of merging, thought there are several other applications.  For right now we will focus on how to keep you and your passangers safe while merging with freeway traffic.

Use the length of the on-ramp to accellerate to the speed of traffic on the freeway.  Always enter the at the speed of traffic. Do not stop before merging into freeway traffic unless absolutely necessary. Remember that freeway traffic has the right-of-way. While most people will be courteous and make room for you to merge, it is important to recognize that it is your responsiblity to merge without interrupting the flow of traffic! Use your mirrors and turn signals, and always check your blind spots.  If you're not already traveling at the speed of traffic by the time you reach the merge lane, you could be putting yourself and other drivers in a dangerous situation.
